Police Accreditation

The Beavercreek Police Department has been recognized as an Internationally re-Accredited police department by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) at their meeting held in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 31, 20010. The Commission reports that the Beavercreek Police Department has met the requirements of a highly-regarded and broadly-recognized body of law enforcement standards, thereby gaining re-accredited status.

The self-evaluation phase of the re-accreditation process required the department to examine all aspects of our department including policy, procedures, management, operations, and support services. Standards developed by CALEA seek to establish the best professional practices for law enforcement agencies. High liability areas such as use of force, vehicle pursuit, training of personnel, and recruitment and selection, are among the many standards an agency must address.

The Beavercreek Police Department’s re-accreditation represents the satisfactory completion of a process of thorough, agency-wide self-evaluation, concluded by an exacting outside review from a team of independent assessors.  The outside review which was conducted by a team of assessors was conducted in April of this year. The assessment team reviewed all policy, procedures, plans, and practices of the department. They then reported to CALEA that the Beavercreek Police Department was in full compliance with all applicable standards.

During the 2010 process former Chief John B. Turner stated, “The accreditation process is designed to increase our accountability to the community by complying with nationally accepted police standards and procedures that are continually reviewed by outside assessors. I am very proud of my employees for their commitment in maintaining this status and believe that our entire community benefits from the professionalism that this process brings to our agency.”

Accreditation is for three years, during which time the agency will submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards. The Beavercreek Police Department was first accredited in 1999 and is currently only one of approximately 37 municipal police agencies in the State of Ohio who have obtain this recognition.
