Julie Vann
In
November 2006, Julie Vann was again elected to City Council for a four
year term and again is serving as Mayor for the first two years.
Julie Vann was first elected to City Council in 1996. In 1999 she was
elected to a second term and served as Mayor from January 1, 2000-December
31, 2001. Term limits ended that service December 31, 2003.
In 2000, the City Council of Beavercreek contracted Wright State
University’s Center for Urban and Public Affairs (CUPA) to develop a long
range vision with defining strategic steps and strategies to meet
community needs in the year 2020. During that process I witnessed the
citizen discussion longing for “building a stronger sense of community.”
In 2004, Mayor Joy Brailey appointed Julie Vann as one of two co-chairs of
the 25th Anniversary Celebration and Events. She accepted the assignment
because it was an opportunity to facilitate the building of a “stronger
sense of community.” We pulled together a committee and as a result
created a Street Art Beaver Sculpture project that would catch people’s
attention.
The primary goal was to celebrate Beavercreek as a great community for
families and business. In addition, we wanted to refresh and record
memories of the community’s accomplishments during the first 25 years as a
city.
Julie Vann graduated from the University of Maryland with a B.S. in Human
Ecology specializing in Housing and Community Development. She has a
Masters of Public Administration degree from the University of Dayton.
During the 30 years she has been involved in Community Development and/or
city governance, she has experience in Iowa City, Kettering, Piqua,
Urbana, Fairborn, and Beavercreek. She has earned certification as a
Community Development Professional for the Ohio Community Development
Conference.
Julie was raised in a small town in Iowa. She first moved to this area is
1979, with her husband, Ken, because of an assignment to Wright Patterson
Air Force Base. They returned to WPAFB and moved into Beavercreek with two
children in 1985. She has been actively involved in school and community
activities ever since. She is passionate about guiding Beavercreek to
strive be a quality, efficient, and effective community. She became
involved to make a difference and to apply her knowledge and experience of
best practices.
