Police Accreditation
On Saturday, April 24, 2010 a team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement (CALEA) arrived to conduct an on-site assessment for re-accreditation. The Assessors examined all aspects of the Police Department in such areas a policy, procedures, management, operations and support services. There are currently 464 standards the Police Department must meet in order to be re-accredited. Sgt. Jim Wuebben is the Accreditation Manager that is overseeing this process. The department awaits a decision from the CALEA Commission at its conference in July.
The Beavercreek Police Department has been recognized as an Internationally re-Accredited police department by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) at their meeting held in Montreal, Quebec on July 28, 2007. The Commission reports that the Beavercreek Police Department has met the requirements of a highly-regarded and broadly-recognized body of law enforcement standards, thereby gaining re-accredited status.
The self-evaluation phase of the re-accreditation process required the Department to examine all aspects of our Department including policy, procedures, management, operations, and support services. Standards developed by CALEA seek to establish the best professional practices for law enforcement agencies. High liability areas such as use of force, vehicle pursuit, training of personnel, and recruitment and selection, are among the many standards an agency must address.
The Beavercreek Police Department’s re-accreditation represents the satisfactory completion of a process of thorough, agency-wide self-evaluation, concluded by an outside review from a team of independent assessors in April of 2010. The assessment team reviewed all policy, procedures, plans, and practices of the Department. They then reported to CALEA that the Beavercreek Police Department was in full compliance with all applicable standards.
Chief John B. Turner stated, “The commitment to the accreditation process is designed to increase our accountability to the community. Our Department aggressively seeks ways to prevent crime, work in partnership with our schools, social agencies, and the community. The increasing support of the Mayor, Council, City Manager and citizens we serve has been critical to our overall success.”
Accreditation is for three years, during which time the agency will submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which we were initially accredited.
